Dr. Nathanson is  an internationally recognized cancer geneticist/genomicist, boarded in Internal Medicine and Clinical Genetics.  She has a busy clinical practice and runs a research laboratory.  Clinically, she manages patients with inherited cancer susceptibility syndromes, in particular those associated with renal and neuroendocrine tumors.  Her research focuses on the elucidation of the inherited and somatic genetics of cancer, specifically in testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT), pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas (PCC/PGL), melanoma, and familial breast cancer.   She has led and participated in multiple clinical studies elucidating genetic variation as it predisposes to cancer, mainly in breast cancer and testicular germ cell tumor. She actively participates in the training of and has mentored many graduate and medical students, residents, and post-doctoral and medical fellows.  She is a member of the Cancer Biology section of the Cell and Molecular Biology and Genomics and Computational Biology graduate groups. She has co-directed the Cancer Biology introductory course for three years. Dr. Nathanson also directed the Medical Genetics rotation in Adult Genetics and the medical resident rotation in Medical Genetics for over 10 years. She serves on the Residency Committee for Medical Genetics, and serves as the co-PI for the Medical Genetics post-doctoral T32.  She has mentored multiple medical and post-doctoral fellows, who have been very successful in obtaining funding and faculty positions.
