Helen L. Coons, Ph.D., ABPP is President and Clinical Director of Women’s Mental Health Associates in Denver and Philadelphia. She is a board certified clinical health psychologist, and a national leader in women’s health and mental health and psychosocial oncology. Dr. Coons has over 25 years of professional experience with women and families coping with physical conditions, collaborating with health care providers and providing consultation on women’s health and mental health care at the national level.
Since 2000, Dr. Coons’ clinical practice has rotated to and and collaborated with women’s primary care, obstetrics/gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and oncology settings where she works with women and couples coping with infertility, pregnancy loss, neonatal deaths, perinatal depression, anxiety and other obstetrical complications as well as early and advanced cancers.
Dr. Coons is a dynamic speaker known at the national level for grand rounds and continuing education workshops for health care providers on women’s health and psychosocial oncology topics. In addition, she has extensive experience presenting to diverse local, national and international audiences of women across the life span. Dr. Coons has given over 90 interactive keynotes, workshops or teleconferences for Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Young Survivors Coalition, University of Pennsylvania Health System and a broad range of other community organizations and hospitals.
Dr. Coons routinely consults at a national level on women’s health and mental health and psychosocial oncology. She is also a highly experienced content expert on women’s health and mental health and psychosocial oncology for TV, radio, magazine, and web writers, enjoys being interviewed by TV and radio stations, and writes patient focused articles for varied publications.
Dr. Coons received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Temple University after interning in Medical Psychology at the Duke University Medical Center. She was also a 2005 DHHS Primary Health Care Policy Fellow. A fellow in the American Psychological Association, Dr. Coons was the founding chair of the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology (2006-2014), and has been elected to the APA Board of Directors (2016-2018).
