    Jefferson's Department of Family and Community Medicine has developed a series of online courses to help practitioners acquire the knowledge and tools to begin to incorporate population health and quality improvement strategies into their practices.

    Learning Objectives & Target Audience

    • Illustrate a framework for approaching opioid use disorder addiction and treatment options that could be applied to your practice.
    • Discuss the basics of medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder.
    • Identify concrete steps for addressing chronic pain in the context of medication assisted treatment.
    • Define the steps to be trained in Suboxone and medication assisted treatment.
    • Recognize patients who need methadone maintenance therapy and refer them using local and national resources for your practice.
    • Describe relationships between opiates and anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, which would impact patient care.

    This course is designed for primary care community preceptors and other healthcare professionals interested in learning about population health principles in practice.

    Bracken P. Babula, MD  - Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine

    Dr. Bracken Babula is a Clinical Assistant Professor at at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and a board-certified internist with Jefferson Internal Medicine Associates.  He trained at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, and then completed his internal medicine/primary care residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Upon completion of his residency, he joined the faculty at Jefferson. Dr. Babula splits his time between clinical care and quality improvement. His clinical care responsibilities include primary care at a large academic practice, with a focus on preventative care, addiction medicine, diabetes, hypertension, HIV and LGBT care.  He works in quality improvement for the Department of Medicine and as an Ambulatory Project Physician for the Epic@Jeff team.

    Janis Bonat, DNP, CRNP - Nurse Practitioner, Family and Community Medicine

    Janis Bonat, DNP, CRNP started her career as a critical care nurse in the intensive care nursery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.  After graduate school, she joined the Department of Family and Community Medicine, at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, as a family practice nurse practitioner where she continues to practice.  Dr. Bonat received her BSN and MSN at Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at West Chester University.  Her publications and research focus on quality care and team-based care in medicine.

    Abigail L. Kay, MD  - Associate Dean, Academic Affairs/ Undergraduate Medical Education and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry & Human Behavior

    Dr. Abigail Kay attended UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She completed her residency training in psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she has been a faculty member and attending physician since 2005. In addition to being board certified by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, she is also a psychoanalyst, having trained and graduated from the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.  In her clinical role, Dr. Kay divides her time between her outpatient practice, in which she specializes in insight-oriented psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and the Narcotic Addiction Rehabilitation Program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where she served as medical director from 2005 – 2015. In addition to being the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs/ Undergraduate Medical Education at the at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, she also teaches addiction medicine extensively at the UME, GME, and CME levels

    Jason C. Ojeda, MD, FACP - Assistant Professor of Medicine

    Jason C. Ojeda, MD, FACP graduated from medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. He is currently an assistant professor of medicine at at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in the division of general internal medicine. He has been practicing outpatient internal medicine at Jefferson since 2013 after completing his residency and chief residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He currently serves as the director of the primary care residency at Thomas Jefferson University and an associate program director for the categorical residency.

    Brooke Worster, MD - Assistant Professor of Medicine

    Brooke Worster, MD completed her internal medicine and chief residency at Temple University and her pain and palliative care fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer center.   She is an assistant professor of medicine in the Jefferson Family and Community Medicine department at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and she practices full time palliative care as the Medical Director of the Neu Center for Supportive Medicine and Cancer Survivorship and the director of outpatient Palliative Care.  She is active teaching faculty for the medical students, residents and fellows. Her research interests, for which she has earned grant support involve pain management in cancer patients as well as the effects of medical cannabis on quality of life and provider perceptions and knowledge around medical cannabis.
