When Breath Becomes Air
Join us for the 5th Annual Palliative Care Spring Symposium! Its goal is to improve the quality and delivery of primary palliative care to all patients and their families with serious, life-threatening illness. Practitioners from all related professions will acquire skills and strategies to help them care for these patients. Designed to include practical presentations with both large and small group formats, the course explores challenging subjects such as physical, emotional and psychosocial care for complex, seriously ill patients.
A special feature of this year's symposium is extensive time to hear and talk with Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, MD, FACP, the widow of the late Dr. Paul Kalanithi, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir, When Breath Becomes Air, for which she wrote the epilogue. At this cross-section of her career as a medical professional and her personal experience, standing alongside her husband during life, diagnosis, treatment and death, Dr. Kalanithi highlights both meaning in medicine as well as end of life care. This perspective enhances the context of discussions throughout the day, adding depth and take home pearls that participants can put into their own practices.
For the afternoon breakout sessions, participants will select two topics of their interest from a plethora of small group discussion topics, including Surrogate Decision Making & Capacity; Potentially Inappropriate Care at End of Life; Non-Pain Symptom Management; Safe and Practical Opioid Prescribing for Palliative Care Patients; How to Help Children through Illness and Loss; Understanding Hospice; Heart Failure and Palliative Care; Managing the Emotionally & Behaviorally Challenging Patient/Family; and Secondary Traumatization/Caregiver Burnout. Facilitated by expert faculty, indepth discussions will enhance learning. Selections will be made when you arrive at the symposium.
