The 43rd Annual Course in Electrodiagnostic Medicine: The Uselessness of Electrical Studies in the Absence of a History and Physical Examination is specifically designed for medical practitioners involved in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of complex patients with motor unit disease or injuries of the motor unit.

The purpose of this course is to describe the necessity of using both the clinical and electrical findings in generating a comprehensive diagnostic report.  Participants will improve the following essential skills in: (1) identifying spontaneous and voluntary waveforms and recruitment patterns; (2) localizing sites of nerve pathology; (3) differentiating axonopathies from myelinopathies; and (4) identifying anterior horn cell and neuromuscular junction diseases and myopathies.  Exemplars of selective diseases and injuries will be presented during the course to help guide the participants in applying new information and best practice guidelines.

Participants are expected to have prior working knowledge of the following key concepts, which represent prerequisite knowledge on which this course will build:

  1. cervical and lumbosacral root innervations,
  2. the anatomy and sensory and motor innervations in the distribution of the median, ulnar, radial, peroneal, tibial, medial and lateral antebrachial cutaneous, dorsal ulnar cutaneous, sural, and superficial peroneal nerves, and
  3. nerve conduction and needle examination techniques.

*the topics listed above will not be covered in this course.
